xiii   (Mark Crispin Miller) ƒn "On 9.11.01, Gov. Jeb Bush declared a state of emergency in FL - and never lifted it, a gambit that enabled the suspension of the state's quite liberal sunshine laws. Thus did the president's brother manage to erect a further barrier to anyone investigating what had happened on Election Day 2000 in the Sunshine State. (No other governor outside New York made such an urgent move).   [ Is this suspension still in effect? ]

5   GW Bush … prestigious pedigree. His ancestral line can be traced back to 14th century, making him a 14th cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and a relative of the entire British royal family. … incl 14th U.S. president Franklin Pierce on mother Barbara's side; paternal grandfather U.S. senator Prescott Bush …

11   … investment banking business like father Prescott & (Shrub) maternal grandfather George Herbert Walker (source of Kennebunkport family compound), forces behind Wall St (firm) Brown Brothers Harriman, largest private banking house in America at time 11-12   Prescott procured his son's first post-graduate job in the oil boomtown Odessa TX as equipt clerk w/ Intl Derrick & Equipt Co (Ideco), Dresser Industries subsidiary, leading manufacturer of drill bits & related oil equipt. Dresser's significance to the Bush family began in 1928 when its directors decided further expansion of family enterprise required the co. to raise new capital by issuing public stock. Prescott's investment house paid $4 million for corporate stock and sold securities against the co. As the elder Bush (Poppy?) later recalled, the banking firm refinanced Dresser in 1929 "so that we retained a substantial measure of control". After the oil well equipt co. was reorganized, Prescott became a member of the board of directors and, along w/ E. Roland "Bunny" Harriman subsequently recommended that H. Neil Mallon, fellow Yale graduate w. close family ties to Tafts of Ohio, became Dresser Industries president and board chair. "I heard stories about 'Uncle Neil' almost from the moment I met George," Barbara Bush wrote in memoir. : He & Prescott Bush were certainly about as different as 2 men could be … both successful in their fields and best of friends."   ƒn Bunny Harriman's older brother Averell Harriman, Yale grad, later was ambassador to USSR & Britain, cabinet officer, NY governor, 2 time unsuccessful presidential candidate, and US rep at Vietnam peace talks in Paris. 13   Mallon briefly transferred Poppy in 1949 to various California towns w/ Dresser subsidiaries. e.g. Carrizo Plains & Cuyama Valley, Huntington Park, Bakersfield, Whittier, Ventura, Compton.

Barbara's mother died in car crash Oct. 1949 21   Barbara confessed later that she & her husband "felt devastated by what we had to tell him." Typically inquisitive, he initially asked several questions but then began beating the car seat and crying uncontrollably when he realized (his parents) had hidden the truth from him about (his consecutive and beloved sibling) Robin's terminal illness for the past several months. When they returned home, Junior ran into his room, slammed the door shut, and destroyed half of his beloved baseball card collection before his mother stopped him. "It was really hard for a little guy to comprehend," (Shrub) admitted in interview years later, stating that he knew Robin was sick, but never dreamed she was dying. "Why didn't you tell me?" (Shrub) repeatedly asked his parents, to which his (Barbara) would reply, "Well, it wouldn't have made a difference."
[ Formative sanctioning of Big Lie. By this, Shrub was innoculated at age 7 that his interests, and by extension those of anyone else, were secondary to the whim & convenience of the dynasty's leaders. ]

22   (Shrub) was plagued by nightmares about his sister's death. While friend Randall Roden was spending the night, (Shrub) had a bad dream; (Barbara) rushed in to comfort him. "It was one of the most realistic experiences I have ever had about death," Roden said in 1999, "I'm certain it had a profound effect on him because it had a profound effect on me." Years later, when (Shrub) ran for TX gubenatorial reelection, Poppy & Barbara acknowledged (Shrub's) "backslapping, wisecracking, ocasionally teasing style"
  [ i.e. snide, insulting & condescending ]
was developed as a child of 7 when his sister died and he felt it was his responsibility to try to lift his parents out of their grief. The loss of Robin left a 7 year gap between firstborn (Shrub) and brother Jeb.

23   (Shrub) acknowledged … "I don't think anyone, incl my mother, knew that a little of me died with Robin … "

Bush-Liedtke partnership of Zapata Petroleum … Hugh Liedtke (called by one writer "boy genius of W.TX oil")   Acting where other investors hesitated, Zapata Petroleum drilled 130 wells w/o encountering a single dry hole.   The partners each became millionaires through increased co. stock value.

25   (Shrub) first noticed middle child Neil had severe reading problems he hid until second grade, later diagnosed as dyslexia. … "I look bacj on those years in W.TX," Barbara recalled "and I wonder how I ever made it w/o my oldest son. There was never groaning & moaning on his part. I probably put more responsibiltiy on him than I should have, esp. for a boy his age. But whom else could I turn to w/ his father gone so much in those days … because of that we have a very special relationship."
[ Overachieving heir by dint of maternal demand ]

26   During mid 1950s (Poppy) & Liedtke brothers concluded large CONUS oil fields were over; … (Poppy) " … offshore was growing … To get that business, you had to take risks."

27   By 1959 Hugh Liedtke was impatient w/ constant meddling of (Shrub's) Uncle Herbie, who honestly believed he was running the oil co. from his Wall St office. Domineering & abrasive Liedtke wanted to compete w/ the majors by heading his own co. Zapata Petroleum Co. "amicably" split via series of complex stock swaps, w/ (Shrub) in control of Zapata Off-Shore w/ Uncle Herbie.

Bushes built new home in Houston suburb. 1961 (Shrub), age 15, sent to strict boarding school Phillips Academy in Andover MA, grandfather's & father's alma mater, essentially mirror image of Yale University, school motto Non Sibi "Not for Self" & Finis Origine Pendet "The End Depends on the Beginning",   military academy "tended to graduate homogeneous boys w/ no more originality than cookie cutter product … good attitude valued more than creativity."

30   Grandfather, father (on board of trustees), uncles and several close family friends incl Neil Mallon
  [ Bonesmen? ]
